PETS & YOUR HVAC SYSTEMS

HVAC Tips for Pet Owners

Pets are beloved family members, but they can have negative impacts on the quality of your indoor air. Learn how to maintain your HVAC system… even with pets!

Here are our simple HVAC tips for pet owners to keep heating and cooling systems running smoothly.

1. Change Air Filters More Frequently

Pet dander is one of the most well-known allergens in the world - and ALL pets come with it. Dander refers to pieces of skin from animals that get swept into the air. In regards to your air quality, dander can pose a serious problem. In order to improve the air quality of your home, remember to change your air filters periodically. Also make sure to use air filters that are built to catch pet dander.

2. Build a Fence Around Your Air Conditioner If your pets spend time in the backyard, be sure to protect your outdoor air conditioner unit. If you have male dogs, you’ll know they like to mark their territory. Unfortunately, if they regularly mark their spot on your outdoor AC unit, it can corrode the AC coils and aluminum fins. If this happens, your AC will cool at a slower pace, which means higher utility bills.

3. Brush Your Pet Regularly

Brushing your pet regularly minimizes the hair fall that can build up in your air filter. Grooming them outside is even better so the fur can blow away in the wind!

4. Vacuum & Dust the House Twice a Week…or More!

Vacuum and dust twice a week or more. Pet hairs like to settle behind desks, shelves, and even toilets. By keeping the floors swept and vacuumed regularly, it will limit the amount of fur and dirt that can stir up from the floor into the air. Maintaining a routine of cleaning and dusting twice a week can significantly reduce your HVAC system’s workload.

5. Twice Annual HVAC Maintenance Appointment

For the health of your HVAC system, maintenance is key. Practice regular maintenance to prevent your unit from being overworked from pet hair and dander.
